U.S. based flights to the recently opened Tulum International Airport have commenced.
March 28th marked the beginning of flights by American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, with United Airlines following suit on March 31.
The flights landed amidst celebrations marked by music, dancing, and décor on both sides of the border.
With more than 6,000 American tourists expected to land at this airport this week alone, the potential for growth and accessibility is evident.
Where is Tulum International Airport located?
Known as the Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport (TQO), the Tulum airport is situated approximately 20 kilometres (12 miles) southwest of Tulum, in the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto.
With its strategic location, the airport is conveniently located near some of the most popular destinations in the region.
Besides, it’s much much better than you having to travel over 1.5 hours from Cancun to Tulum!
Which Airlines will fly to Tulum Airport?
The Tulum airport will be connected to major hubs including Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Miami, and Newark.
Both American Airlines and Delta Airlines have already commenced direct flights from the U.S.
And United Airlines is scheduled to offer non-stop flights between the U.S. and Tulum with 22 weekly flights.
American Airlines from destinations:

- Philadelphia – approx. $350
- Dallas – approx. $315
- Boston – approx. $300
- Miami – approx. $243
Delta Airlines from destinations:
- New York – approx. $359

United Airlines from destinations:
- Newark/New York – approx. $265
- Houston – approx. $233
- Chicago – approx. $223
- LA – approx. $303
Spirit Airlines too will be commencing flights from Fort Lauderdale and Orlando soon.
Plus Air Canada is set to commence flights to Tulum in May, with JetBlue Airways and Panama’s Copa Airlines joining in June.
Tulum Airport Transportations:
After arriving at the Tulum International Airport, you can choose from several transfer options.
Here’s what each one costs:
- ADO Public Bus – 175 MXN per person (approx. $11)
- Private Shuttle – starts at 3924 MXN (approx. $238)
- Car rentals – start at approx. $30 per day
- Taxis – start at $95 and can go up to $500 depending on your final destination
And soon, you’ll be able to catch the Tren Maya directly from Tulum Airport, thanks to the onsite station being constructed.
However, there are many challenges the airport faces.
Honestly speaking, the Tulum airport, though promising, remains a work in progress.
It’s got limited ground transportation options, and high costs and taxes.
Moreover, protests have erupted, blocking access roads to the airport and adjacent Tren Maya stations.
These protests are over land rights, and talks with airport and government authorities are underway to address these concerns.
Despite these challenges, the opening of Tulum International Airport = increase in accessibility to the Mayan Riviera.
